Optimal state-dependent rules, credibility, and inflation inertia

چکیده
We use a state-dependent model where pricing rules are optimal to examine the costs of a money-based disinflation under various assumptions about the credibility of the policy change. Our analysis allows us to relate actual credibility and future inflation inertia to the asymmetry of the price deviation distribution. An important implication of our statedependent setting is that disinflation can be attained without substantial cost even in a situation of low credibility, provided that a mechanism of price alignment eliminates the asymmetry of the price deviation distribution. We also develop an analytical framework for analyzing intermediate imperfect credibility cases. r 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. JEL classification: E31; E52

Optimal Interest-Rate Rules in a Forward-Looking Model, and Inflation Stabilization versus Price-Level Stabilization∗
This paper characterizes the properties of various interest-rate rules in a basic forwardlooking model. We compare simple Taylor rules and rules that respond to price-level fluctuations (called Wicksellian rules). We argue that by introducing an appropriate amount of history dependence in policy, Wicksellian rules perform better than optimal Taylor rules in terms of welfare, robustness to alter...
متن کاملThe equivalence of robustly optimal targeting rules and robust control targeting rules: an extension
Walsh (2004) demonstrated that the robustly optimal targeting rule of Giannoni and Woodford (2003a, 2003b) and the targeting rule of a policy maker concerned with robustness in the sense of Hansen and Sargent (2004) were identical in a purely forward-looking new Keynesian model. In this note, I first show that the equivalence result extends to a new Keynesian model with inflation inertia (Woodf...
متن کاملOptimal Policy Rules for Iran in a DSGE Framework (Islamic Musharakah Approach)
The aim of this paper is determination of an optimal policy rule for Iranian economy from an Islamic perspective. This study draws on an Islamic instrument known as the Musharakah contract to design a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model. In this model the interest rate is no longer considered as a monetary policy instrument and the focus is on the impact of economic shocks on the Dynam...
متن کاملWoodford’s Approach to Robust Policy Analysis in a Linear-Quadratic Framework∗
This paper extends Woodford’s (2010) approach to the robustly monetary policy to a general linear quadratic framework. We provide algorithms to solve for a time-invariant linear robustly optimal policy from a timeless perspective and for a time-invariant linear Markov perfect equilibrium under discretion. We apply our methods to a New Keynesian model of monetary policy with persistent cost-push...
متن کاملSpecifying and Estimating New Keynesian Models with Instrument Rules and Optimal Monetary Policies∗
This paper looks at whether sticky-price New Keynesian models with microfounded inertia can usefully describe US data. We estimate a range of models, considering specifications with either internal or external consumption habits, specifications containing Taylor-type rules or an optimal discretionary rule, and specifications where inflation is driven by movements in either the gap or real margi...
